Demand letter: what to include
- 1The facts in date order: what was agreed, what you did, what they didn't.
- 2The exact amount and a deadline as a date.
- 3How to pay.
- 4The lawful next step if the deadline passes.
- 5A list of the evidence you attach.
Questions
- Do I need a lawyer to send one?
- No. Anyone can send a demand letter. In some countries a formal route (a notary, registered mail with receipt) gives it more weight — the notes under your letter tell you which.
- How long a deadline should I give?
- 7 to 14 days is common. Pick a date that is clearly reasonable; it helps if the case goes further.
- Should I threaten to sue?
- State it as a fact, not a threat: if it's not paid by the date, you will take the next legal step. Never threaten anything unlawful.
