Resignation letter: what to include
- 1A clear, unconditional sentence that you resign — and from which position.
- 2Your last working day as a date, matching your notice period.
- 3An offer to hand over your work.
- 4A request to confirm receipt, your last day and your final pay.
- 5Brief thanks — no complaints, no long reasons.
Questions
- Do I have to give a reason?
- No. In most countries a resignation needs no reason. One neutral line is fine; more can be used against you.
- Can I resign by email?
- It depends on the country. In Germany, for example, a resignation must be on paper with your handwritten signature — an email is not valid. The notes under your letter tell you how to deliver it where you are.
- When does my notice period start?
- Usually on the day your employer receives the letter. Keep proof of delivery: a signed copy, a receipt or a registered-mail slip.
